  • Debatercast! Episode 03: Featuring Gary Larson

    RobGlass

I'm joined by Dr. Gary Larson for this episode. Dr. Larson is currently the Director of Institutional Research and Academic Support at Wheaton college, but people in debate are more likely to know him from his over thirty years of presence in Tabrooms across the community, and for him being one of the fathers of the modern preference system used across debate. In this interview we talk about Dr. Larson's background in debate, how he came to run tabrooms, the history and controversy of prefs, and the misconceptions that abound about how you should do your pref sheet.

related question - what are some good podcasts for debaters that are not strictly about debate?

I know spotify has some philosophy-related ones, if that's your thing.

For politics I highly recommend FiveThirtyEight's politics podcast.

For Nuclear Policy I recommend the Arms Control Wonk with Jeffrey Lewis. A+ work there.

For a Left-Wing take on politics try out Jacobin Radio.

For Critical Theory I've heard good things about Always Already, but I'm iffy on it.

I would warn against always already. It’s a group of mostly white people dissecting largely black scholarship in really reductive and violent ways. For example one of their most frequent guests, Prof shadee malaklou said some very weird doody on their podcast on Calvin warren and black nihilism. No ones explicitly called the podcast out (as in like in a paper or whatver) but informally there’s been a lot of people calling it parasitic (twitter threads, blogposts etc from people around/in afropessimism scholarship). People say Vitamin D podcast is better but I’ve only heard one episode so unsure

I listened to two episodes of Always Already, one was... okay? Mostly uninspired takes but at least they were talking about stuff I cared about.  The other sounded like it was going a bad place but the audio quality was just horrible so I couldn't keep going.   I hate _hate_ hate podcasts that ship with doodyty audio, and after that even though I wanted to listen to a couple more episodes I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

Hey I really enjoyed this.  When is episode 4 going up?

    This week.

There's been a delay, when the interview goes up you'll see why.

BTW, if you haven't already I recommend listening to the archive. You can find it on iTunes and Android Podcasts and also at https://debatercast.com/ if manually downloading files is your game.

I listened to the other 2 episodes too, but this one was even better.  I got to hear about debate through the years from an old timer.  Shree and CV seem like smart, dedicated coaches, but what they say (not necessarily how they said it) seemed to overlap a lot with what other young coaches say.  the interview with Gary Larson is really unique and something that draws users specifically to this site.

The next episode just got released via my feed, and should be up here by tomorrow morning. If you liked Gary Larson I'm willing to bet you'll like this one.
